July kept Erika Paul Carlson busy with diverse concerts and music activities. On Sunday, July 11th, Erika was the featured artist on KUNR-FM 88.7 radio at 3 p.m. in an interview with Danna O’Connor on the program Community Voices. In July, Erika was also interviewed for SNCAT-TV by Willie Albright. On Wednesday, July 14th, Erika joined forces with Artown, Sierra Arts, the Arbors, Lynette Schweigert of Moments of Memory and altzheimer’s residents for her Breath Of Hope event from 2 to 5 p.m. On Thursday, July 15th, Erika’s quartet, featuring Ed Easton on tenor sax, Chuck DiLaura on bass, Chuck Hughes on drums and Erika on piano and vocals joined forces with visual artists Erik Holland, Lynette Schweigert, photographer Lana March and Steinway Gallery Reno for her Artown “Jazz Moods & Art III” event from 6 to 8 p.m. featuring live jazz, poetry, art, photography and original music. Erika’s July Wild River Grille dates were Friday, July 9th, Thursday, July 22nd, Sunday, July 25th (cancelled due to thunderstorms and rescheduled for 7/28) and this Wednesday, July 28th from 7 to 10 p.m. On Sunday, July 18th, Erika also had the honor to play with her trio and also accompany one of the senator’s singing nieces at the NACo Arts Awards Dinner at Cathexes in the Collaborative at 250 Bell in Reno, NV, a national arts awards event and fundraiser organized by the Nevada Arts Council and Sierra Arts. Erika will finish off the month with a heartfelt sing-a-long concert at the Fountains Elder Care facility in Reno at 3 p.m. Erika loves to make time to serve the community whenever she can, especially to serve our schools and seniors who otherwise might not make it out to concert or gig. JAZZ MOODS & ART III is the third successful Artown jazz concert art exhibition event of it’s kind that will take place on Thursday, July 15th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Steinway Gallery, 500 E. Moana Lane in Reno, Nevada. Does a piece of music inspire the creation of a painting? Does a visual work of art inspire the creation of a music composition? Attend this event to find your answer. Breath Of Hope celebrates it’s second year of success on Wednesday, July 14th from 1 to 3 p.m, at the Arbors in Sparks, Nevada. This unique Artown event is a compassionate collaboration of private and non-profit local arts organizations and artists of the Sierra Arts Elder Care Concert Series program, a community program originally created by healing arts musicians Dallas Smith and Susan Mazer. The Moments of Memory art class/gallery exhibition by Lynette Schweigert will feature expressions and creations by Alzheimer’s residents at the Arbors and music will be provided by jazz singer songwriter pianist Sierra Arts and Nevada Arts Council resident music artist Erika Paul Carlson. Wow! Where is the summer going? Some of the most amazing events happen in high desert Reno Nevada in July when the weather, although very hot and windy during the day, is just beautiful from 7 p.m. on into the night. Jazz pianist and vocalist Erika Paul Carlson performs on the outdoor stage of the Wild River Grille, located at 17 South Virginia Street in downtown Reno on Friday, July 9th, Thursday, July 22nd and Sunday, July 25th from 7 to 10 p.m. You’ll find an open air stage set up in front of many tables, each with it’s own umbrella, where you can hear and see the Truckee River flow through the heart of Northern Nevada directly across the restaurant’s front entrance. You can even catch excited newlyweds having their wedding pictures taken outdoors by freelance photographers right on the river and riverwalk while followed by their entourage of bridesmaids and best men. June marks the first official month of summer and music artist Erika Paul Carlson is keeping busy! On Saturday, June 5th (7 to 10 p.m.), Thursday, June 17th, (7 to 10 p.m.) and Sunday, June 27th, (2 to 5 p.m.) She’ll be making the music at the Wild River Grille, 17 S. CAREER DAY AT SPARKS MIDDLE SCHOOL, SPARKS NV

On Friday, May 21st, 2010, at 8 a.m. in the morning (a sometimes dreadful time to have to perform for a jazz musician) Erika Paul Carlson joined a whole band of local musicians to play and talk about careers in music for band and choir teacher Judy Lindquist and her four classes of bright and interested students at Sparks Middle School’s Annual Career Day in Sparks, Nevada. Judy Lindquist, an exceptional teacher and performer, also taught at O’Brien Middle School and was voted MyNEWS4 Teacher of the year in 2004, organized the meeting and continues to inspire kids to work hard and prepare for success. The Career Day band consisted of Michael Bailey on tenor sax, Judy Lindquist on alto sax, Lee Warner on drums, Dr. Don Simpson on acoustic bass, Dwight Carlson on acoustic guitar and papoose and Erika on clavinova keyboard and vocals, singing call and response and “scatting” on vocals with an excited group of choir students. For all four classes, the band also tore it up on some classic Charlie Parker tunes and even excited teachers in the classes down the hall to pop their heads in to ask the name and composer of each tune. The kids asked tons of questions and learned a great deal about how to prepare, including through higher education and private training, for a career in music and engaged in eye-opening discussions of different opportunities available to them to make a living in the field of music performance and education. Each band member thoroughly enjoyed opening up and reflecting on their music experiences and successes for these students who truly appreciated the opportunity to ask questions and “hang out” with “pros” in the field.

Sierra Swing Band Ballroom Dance at the Reno Elks Club

On Sunday, May 16, 2010, from 3 to 6 p.m.,the Sierra Swing Band will hold their monthly ballroom dance at the Elks Lodge in Reno, Nevada. The band, a LIVE 16 piece big band, will play dance music and signature arrangements for a full dance floor of dancers. Dance lessons will be also given an hour before the band starts the music. Bar, food and coat check also available. On piano, Erika joins her husband Dwight on guitar as they fill out the rhythm section of this swingin’ group. On Thursday, May 6, 2010, Erika and her jazz trio will play at the Senior Center on 9th & Sutro in Reno Nevada at 10 a.m. The event will feature Erika’s “100 Years of Toe-Tapping Jazz” interactive concert with Erika on piano and vocals, Gary Douglas on bass and Andy Heglund on drums in collaboration with the Washoe County Library System. This event is free and open to the community. On Friday, May 21, 2010, at Sparks Middle School in Sparks, Nevada starting at 9 a.m., Erika is one of six musicians from the Sierra Swing Big Band, led by Russ and Judy Lindquist, featured as career music education and performance mentors for these bright middle school students for their annual Career Day. And on Monday, May 31st, 2010, Erika will provide inspiring and entertaining interactive music on piano and vocals for the Arbors Alzheimers Facility in Sparks, Nevada at 2 p.m. Erika will perform classic songs from the 1920’s - 40’s and her husband Dwight plans to perform his signature Louis Armstrong song “What A Wonderful World”.
